Emerald Lake / Moon Lake
To access Emerald Lake you must head up the Pine River Trail to Lake Fork Trail. This is a long out and back trail with gorgeous high country views. You only need to hike 10 miles of this trail to reach Emerald Lake. Part of the trail passes through private land so please respect your surroundings. You’ll reach Little Emerald Lake first, continue a shot distance to Big Emerald Lake. Camp for the night, do some fishing and enjoy! Highland Mary Lakes
This is a scenic series of 7 alpine lakes. You’ll need a multi-day hike to visit all 7 lakes, but day hikers can reach 3 of the lakes on an advanced day hike. Always be prepared when high country hiking, weather can change rapidly. To access the Highland Mary Lakes, you must hit the Highland Mary Lakes Trail in the High Country Trail System. Map

High Country Trail System
This high elevation trail system boasts 14 trails! Always be prepared for rapid weather changes, wildlife and sun/heat exposure when enjoying these scenic views. Potato Lake Trail- A 2 mile trail around the lake with scenic views. This is an easier hike. Don’t forget to bring the fishing poles. Columbine Lake Trail- Begins as the Ruby Drainage Trail and turns into the Columbine Lake Trail. An 8.3 mile trail that is considered a difficult level. Coming from the east, off of Route 550, you will not need a high clearance 4×4 vehicle to access the trailhead. But if you come up from the west, across the pass, you would need a high clearance 4×4. The turn for the road to the trailhead is just below the parking for OPUS Hut. Follow the an unnamed dead-end road east. You can park along the road near the trailhead. Crater Lake Trail- About a 5.4 mile trail that begins at Andrews Lake south of Molas Pass on US 550. There is some elevation gains and switchbacks on this trail. La Plata Canyon
La Plata has bunches trails, 4×4-ing and hiking options. There are beautiful scenes waiting for you here! Plan a full day, so be prepared to start early. This area does tend to get afternoon thunderstorms and the weather can change rapidly, so always have the proper gear. If you’re driving up La Plata road, it will eventually lead you to Kennebec Pass. This pass is for high clearance 4×4 vehicles ONLY! Map
Three Springs Trail System
Mercy Loop- A short beginner .05 mile loop. Water Tank Rd- A connector trail that gives access from Mercy Trail to the Grandview Ridge Trail system. Three Springs Connector Loop- This short beginner trail connects Water Tank Rd to the new Spur Line biking trails. Spur Line Trails- 5 miles of single track and one small pump track for bikers of all ages! Switcher Loop- A 2.7 mile loop. The very beginning of this loop is a kid friendly bike pump track. Rail Spike Loop- An easier 1.7 mile loop for beginner bikers. Map
Twin Buttes Trail System
These trails have something for everyone. They range from advanced downhills to easier straight aways. Mostly for biking, hiking or running but some trails offer winter fun as well. Twin Buttes Trail– This is an advanced 1.9 mile trail with some steep climbs. You can access the dirt parking lot off of the Hwy 160 and E Twin Buttes rd. East Twin Buttes Trail- This is a short connection trail that gets you to the main Twin Buttes Trail listed above. The Buttes Trail- .07 mile Single track trail that is popular with bikers. Mid Traverse Trail- An easier flat connector trail about a mile long. Cliffrock Loop Trail- 2.5 mile loop with some moderate gains. Lightner Creek Trail- 1.8 mile trail Lower Ed and Flo Trail- A .07 mile trail with tons of fun to be had. Downhill with curves, and jumps. Upper Ed and Flo Trail- Advanced trail with steeper down hills and tight curves. Lower BC and F Trail- 1.1 mile trail that follows the old railroad grade. Upper BC and F Trail- Continues the old railroad grade for 1.1 miles. Map
Fort Lewis Trail System
This is a 15 trail system with a range of difficulties from easy to advanced. Some are connector trails to gain access to other trails in this system. Squawker/Talker/Shocker Trail– These are all short connection trails Rim Trail– This is an easy trail that offers great views. It is a 2.9 mile trail with and elevation gain of 415 ft. Lions Den Trail– An easy 1.7 mile trail. This trail has a bench about half way up where you can enjoy the views and turn around if you want a shorter trek. Bread Express Trail– This is a short connector trail that can get you to Skyline and Powerline trails. You an access this trail from Florida Road. Ball Lane– This is a parking are where you can connect with Skyline, Powerline and Bread Express Trail. Powerline Trail– A 2.4 mile trail. You can access this trail either from Horse Gulch Road or Chapman Hill Ice Rink off Florida Road. Skyline Trail– A 3.1 mile trail with some advanced switchbacks, so be prepared. Overend Mountain Park Trail System
This 300 acre trail system is a bikers paradise! Hike, bike, run and even do winter recreation here in this interconnected 14 trail system. Hidden Valley Trail– This is a 1.2 mile trail that connects to many trails in the Overend Mountain Park Trail system. This trail has an elevation gain of 480 ft. Browns Ridge Trail– An intermediate 0.6 mile trail with beautiful views. Elevation gain of 240 ft. Ella Vita Trail– Accessed from the Ella Vita Court parking area and connects to several trails. A 1.9 mile intermediate trail with an elevation gain of 450 ft. Spirit Trail– A intermediate 1.9 mile trail that is accessed from the Ella Vita Court parking area. This trail does contain switchbacks and has an elevation gain of 520 ft. Perin’s Gulch Trail-This trail starts via Leyen st. A 1.2 mile trail that gives access to several trails in this system. Dalla Mountain Park Trail System
This trail system consists of 5 trails that have something for everyone! Hikers, bikers, and climbers alike enjoy this popular trail system. Sailing Hawks Trail- This trail is .9 mile in length and gives access to bouldering and hiking. Jacobs Cliff Trail- This is a 1.5 mile trail with access to climbing, biking and hiking. Bouldering Trail- This is a 0.53 mile trail that can be accessed via Jacobs Cliff Trail. This trail gives access to bouldering, hiking and biking. Junction Trail- This is a 2.37 mile that is accessed by Jacobs Cliff Trail. This trail gives access to hiking, biking and climbing. Ponderosa Trail- This is a 0.6 mile trail that can connect hikers to Animas Mountain. Map
Church Camp Trails
The Church Camp Trail system is made of 2 trailheads. The first is Church Camp Loop. The loop starts at the parking area which is marked by a large boulder. Follow the trail through the meadow and to the right, up the hill, then descend to a waterfall. Length- 1.4 miles with an elevation gain of 340 ft There is an out and back trail in this trail system called Ridge Hike Trail. This trail starts as the Church Camp Loop and cuts away to the top of the ridge. Length- 1.3 miles with an elevation gain of 200 ft Map
Dry Fork Trail
This is an intermediate trail that loops up to the Colorado Trail then back to Gudy’s Rest where you will connect with Hoffheins Trail. Don’t forget to take a lest at the trail junction at the end of Hoffheins Trail to descend back to the parking lot. Map
Hoffheins Trail
This is a connection trail. To access this trail you can take a left at Gudy’s Rest. You can loop back around from Dry Fork trail back to the Colorado Trail. This is a short intermediate trail. This trail can also be accessed by Dry Fork Trail. Length-1.3 miles with an elevation gain of 442 ft Map The map is of Gudy’s Rest where you will find the trailhead which cuts down to Dry Fork Trail.
Colorado Trail to Gudy’s Rest
This is an moderate trail with beautiful river views. This trail has multiple uses but is heavily trafficked. The trail is accessible year round. Length-9.1 miles out and back with an elevation gain of 1309 ft Map Remember, you must have a valid Colorado fishing license to fish!
Junction Creek Campground
This campground is just 5 miles NW of Durango. This is a near the Log Chutes Trail System. The campsite has 44 campsites, 29 sites that can be reserved and 14 sites with electrical hook-ups. Junction Creek Campground also has one group campsite accommodating up to 50 people. The day-use loop has one group picnic site that can accommodate 65 people and includes a pavilion, horseshoe pits, volleyball court, and electrical hookups. This group day use area is reservable. There is also one family picnic site available on a first-come, first-served basis. You can fish in Junction Creek. Animas Overlook Trail
The Animas Overlook Trail is a difficult trail which begins/ends at the Animas Overlook and continues for 3 miles to meet Log Chutes 1. This is an advanced level trail do please be prepared. You can drive to the Animas Overlook on Junction Creek Road for beautiful views of the Animas Valley. This is a part of the Log Chutes Trail System. Length- 2.9 miles with an elevation gain of 1400 ft There are picnic tables available at the overlook. Map
Log Chutes Trail System
This is an advanced trail so please be prepared. This is the first trail in the Log Chutes Trailhead and provides access to Log Chutes 1, Log Chutes 2, Log Chutes 3, Log Chutes Downhill, Animas Overlook Trail and Westview Loop. Map
X-Rock Climbing Area
For those of you that are rock climbers, X marks the spot! This is an intermediate difficulty climb with an elevation gain of 465 ft Directions- From Durango, head north on Main Street to 38th street. X-Rock is located just north of city limits at approximately 38th and Main Ave. It is clearly visible on the west side of Hwy 550 North. Map
Animas Mountain Trails
There are several trail accessible in this trail system. The main trail is the Upper Animas Mountain Loop. This is a 5 mile loop round trip with an elevation gain of 1428 ft Other trails in this system include: Swerve Trail- .6 miles Merv Trail- .2 miles Birket Trail- .5 miles Directions to Birket Trail- From Durango, head north on Main Street to 25th street. Head west on 25th which turns into Junction Street. In .6 mile, turn right onto Birket. Park on the street and enter the trail which leads into the Animas Mountain or Dalla Mountain Park systems. Sick Bird Trail- 1.7 miles Animas Mountain Lower Loop- 1.9 miles The upper loop of Animas Mountain is closed for seasonal wildlife closures from December 1 to April 15. Map to Trailhead
Ice Lakes Trail
This is a difficult level hike with stunning views. On this trail you can visit 3 lakes, Ice lake, Fueller lake and island lake. Elevation is high, can be windy. Always watch the weather and be prepared for rapid change. Distance- 3.75 miles one way Elevation- Begin at 9,840 feet – End at 12,260 feet Parking is limited. Cundiff Park
This is a bikers paradise! This park has a BMX track, a mountain bike beginner’s pump track, the Animas River Trail and Animas River Access. Driving Map
Lemon Reservoir / Campgrounds
This is a great reservoir for some outdoor fun! This place has 10 miles of shoreline for fishing, plenty of hiking and biking trails, and small boat ready! This is a high elevation lake with generally cold water but the intermittent winds make this a popular place for sail boating. There’s no day use fee and plenty of boat trailer parking! Vallecito Reservoir / Camping
Beautiful lake in Bayfield that offers fishing, boating and beautiful views. There are a couple places to grab lunch around the lake or just pack a lunch and hang on the many spots around the lake for a swim. Bring the boat, fishing poles, paddle board, or kayak for a fun filled day! Facilities- There is parking and a vault toilet near the Vallecito event center. Marina and boat launch. Navajo Lake
Directions: Take HWY 160 west towards Durango. Take a left to go SW on CO-151. Turn left onto County Rd 982 Facilities: Vault Toilets This is great recreational lake not too far from Pagosa town limits! The lake surroundings can sometimes be muddy so if you plan to drive down to the shore please be aware that you might get stuck. There are no shaded spots near the lake so bring a sunshade and lot’s of sunblock. This is a boater and fishing paradise, bring the boat or rent one!
